Gosport Hospital Deaths: 24 Suspects Identified by Police

Police Update on Gosport Hospital Case

Police have found 24 suspects connected to the deaths of hundreds of patients at Gosport War Memorial Hospital. This is one of the biggest scandals in NHS history, where many patients died under suspicious circumstances.

What Are the Suspects Accused Of?

Out of the 24 suspects:

  • Twenty-one people are suspected of causing death through serious negligence (gross negligence manslaughter).
  • Three others are accused of breaking health and safety rules that protect workers.

The police are now sending information about these suspects to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The CPS will decide if any of the suspects will face criminal charges and what those charges will be.

What Happened at Gosport Hospital?

A 2018 investigation looked into what happened at the hospital between 1987 and 2001. The report found that a large number of patients died earlier than expected because they were given too many painkillers, even when it wasn’t needed. The report said:

  • Many patients were given dangerous doses of pain medication that weren’t necessary.
  • At least 450 patients, and likely another 200, died earlier than they should have because of these high doses of opioids (strong painkillers).

How Are the Police Investigating?

The Kent and Essex police units lead this investigation, known as “Operation Magenta.” This investigation is one of the most extensive and complicated investigations in UK policing history. So far, the police have:

  • Checked medical records of over 750 patients.
  • Read through 3 million pages of documents.
  • Collected 1,200 witness statements from family members.

What Are the Next Steps?

Deputy Chief Constable Neil Jerome said the police are now sending the information they have gathered to the CPS. They have interviewed the suspects, but no one has been arrested yet.

Families Demand Justice

Many families have been fighting for years for justice. Some have called the hospital a “death factory.” Previous investigations into the deaths were criticized as ineffective and slow, leaving families without the closure they desperately needed.

Rachel Power, head of the Patients Association, said identifying the 24 suspects is crucial in this sad case. She urged the police to act quickly because the families have been waiting far too long for answers.

Emma Jones, a lawyer representing some families, also expressed frustration, saying that progress has been slow despite many years of waiting.

Fresh Inquests Ordered

Last year, a court ordered new inquests (investigations into deaths) for three patients: Gladys Richards, Arthur Cunningham, and Robert Wilson. Families have been calling for a full public inquiry, similar to the one for the Hillsborough disaster, to get more answers about what happened at Gosport Hospital.

In 2018, the investigation found that when families raised concerns about the use of opioids, the authorities did not take their complaints seriously. NHS leaders, regulators, politicians, and even the CPS failed to take action that could have saved lives.

Conclusion

This case has been ongoing for many years, and while there has been progress, the families of the victims are still waiting for justice. The police are now working with the CPS to decide the next steps in bringing those responsible to justice.
