Harrods Boss Apologizes for Failing Staff After Allegations Against Mohamed Al Fayed
Harrods’ Director Says Sorry After Abuse Claims
The head of Harrods, Michael Ward, has apologized to staff after serious claims against the store’s former owner, Mohamed Al Fayed, surfaced. Several women have accused Al Fayed of sexual abuse during his time running the luxury department store.
Toxic Environment Under Al Fayed
Michael Ward revealed that Al Fayed created a workplace filled with fear, secrecy, and intimidation. He described it as a dark and shameful time in the store’s history.
Accusations of Abuse
Five women have come forward, stating they were raped by Al Fayed, who passed away last year at 94. Other former employees have also accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior.
Ward Unaware of Abuse
Michael Ward worked at Harrods while Al Fayed owned it, but he denied knowing about the abusive acts. He said he had never been informed by police, internal teams, or others about the allegations. Had he known, he claims he would have acted immediately.
Apology to Harrods Workers
In a statement, Ward said, “We failed our colleagues, and for that, we are deeply sorry.” He added that he was horrified by the stories of abuse shared by the brave survivors.
Independent Review in Progress
An independent investigation is now investigating the claims against Al Fayed. Ward assured that he had shared all the information he had to ensure his actions and those of his colleagues were reviewed.
Support for Former Employees
Harrods has established a process to help former employees affected by the alleged abuse. The company encourages anyone with concerns to come forward for support and resolution.
Harrods Today Is Different
Ward emphasized that Harrods, under its current management, is not the same as it was under Al Fayed’s control. The store has taken steps to change, including working with external experts to handle any claims related to past personal injuries.
More to Come
This is a developing story, and Harrods is expected to share more details as the investigation continues.
