Typing These Four Characters Can Crash Your iPhone Instantly
Be careful with this trick, but we know you’ll probably still want to try it!
Phones can be glitchy sometimes, and it’s always annoying when they freeze or crash at the worst possible moment. But what if you could crash your iPhone on purpose? Sounds strange, right?
Well, there’s a way to do just that by simply typing four random characters into your iPhone. This quirky bug was discovered in a hidden part of your phone, and it’s pretty hard to stumble upon by accident. But if you’re curious, here’s how it works.
All you need to do is go to your iPhone settings, tap on the search bar at the top, and type in -“”::- (that’s two speech marks and two colons). Once you do this, your screen may go black, the app might close, or your phone could even freeze before it restarts itself. Some users found that even adding another character after these symbols causes the same crash effect.
Some people might worry that this glitch could affect their phone’s security, but don’t worry! According to iOS security expert Ryan Storz, this trick won’t harm your phone’s safety.
This isn’t the first time random characters have caused iPhones to crash. Similar issues happened in 2015 with Arabic characters and again in 2018 with an Indian Telugu letter. In 2020, a combination of Sindhi letters and an Italian flag emoji also led to crashes.
It does make you wonder, though—who is figuring this stuff out?
