British Prisoner Among Five Escaped From Portuguese High-Security Jail
A British prisoner, labeled “extremely dangerous,” is one of five men who managed to break out of a high-security prison in Portugal. Authorities are actively searching for the fugitives, who received help from accomplices on the outside during their escape.
Escape Details
Mark Cameron Roscaleer, a 39-year-old British national, was serving a nine-year sentence for kidnapping and robbery at the Vale de Judeus prison, located about 43 miles north of Lisbon. On Saturday morning, Roscaleer and four other inmates scaled the prison walls with a ladder provided by outside collaborators. They fled in two vehicles, a Mercedes and a Volvo.
Prisoners Involved
The five men, aged between 33 and 61, are considered highly dangerous. Besides Roscaleer, the other escapees include:
- Fernando Ferreira (61), Portuguese, serving a 25-year sentence for drug trafficking, theft, robbery, and kidnapping.
- Fabio Loureiro (33), Portuguese, also serving 25 years for extortion, theft, and money laundering.
- Rodolfo Lohrmann (59), Argentinian, was sentenced to 18 years and 10 months for theft, robbery, and money laundering.
- Shergili Farjiani (42), originally from Georgia, served seven years for violent crimes, theft, and forgery.
Well-Planned Escape
Frederico Morais, head of the National Union of Prison Guards, warned the public not to approach the men, describing them as “extremely dangerous.” The escape was reportedly well-organized, with the prisoners climbing over the prison walls using a ladder and a makeshift rope.
Luis Neves, the national director of the Judicial Police, confirmed that the prisoners’ escape was meticulously planned. Except for Shergili Farjiani, all fugitives have attempted to escape prison multiple times before. Neves stressed that the escapees are willing to go to extreme lengths, including risking human lives, to avoid recapture.
Concerns About Prison Security
The prison union raised concerns about a lack of security, citing that the surveillance towers were unmanned due to a shortage of prison guards. The prison service confirmed that the escape occurred at 10:00 a.m. local time, and authorities have since been coordinating with international agencies to track the escapees.
As the search for the fugitives continues, the Portuguese authorities urge people to remain vigilant and report any sightings immediately.
