Top Tories and Trump Spread Open Racism in the U.K., Says Labour Minister
Racist Language Encourages Hate Against Asylum Seekers, Says Angela Eagle
Former U.S. President Donald Trump and senior U.K. Conservatives have encouraged open racism on the streets of Britain, according to a Labour Party minister. Angela Eagle, a Home Office minister focusing on irregular migration, stated that Trump’s comments and social media posts created hatred against migrants. She added that some right-wing Conservatives used harmful language, giving a warning sign to racists.
Politicians Fueling Anti-Immigrant Hate
At a Labour conference meeting, Eagle explained that it has become harder for immigrants to deal with the constant negative talk about migration. It is happening not just in the U.K. but across many Western countries. She said, “Trump’s use of memes about building walls shows the level of hatred it has sparked.”
Eagle also said that the Conservative Party’s fear of losing votes to the Reform Party has pushed their ministers to use negative language about asylum seekers. This harmful language, she argued, created a space for open racism in the U.K. “The way some government officials talked about asylum seekers at least gave a signal to those who wanted to engage in racism,” Eagle explained.
Harmful Discourse Around Asylum Seekers
While she didn’t name specific ministers, Eagle told The Guardian that their use of toxic language contributed to the rise of racism. She also said that the way the U.K. processes asylum seekers needs to change to be faster and less traumatic.
“Many asylum seekers have been through terrible experiences and dangerous journeys,” Eagle said. “We need a system that helps them quickly and fairly, without making their mental health worse.”
Stopping Dangerous Crossings
Eagle also discussed how the government plans to collaborate with other countries to prevent people from crossing the English Channel in small boats. Instead of spending money on ineffective policies, like the Rwanda scheme, she said the U.K. would focus on stopping the gangs that organize these crossings.
“This requires cooperation with European law enforcement to catch the criminal gangs that profit from these dangerous crossings,” Eagle said. She emphasized the importance of international teamwork and intelligence sharing to combat these criminals.
Home Secretary’s Speech on Law and Order
On Tuesday, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper will speak about how crime in the U.K. increased under the Conservative government. She plans to announce new powers to address antisocial behavior, shoplifting, and illegal use of off-road bikes. Cooper will also promise more neighborhood police officers.
She will reject claims that the recent riots were about immigration or poverty, saying that they happened because criminals thought they wouldn’t be punished. “It wasn’t about immigration or the police. It happened because criminals believed they could get away with it,” Cooper will say in her speech.
